What does Islam say about sexless marriages? Many people ask this question. Before answering this, let me tell you a little story. A couple was living very happily. But one day, the wife fell ill.
The husband sees different doctors. Moves from one medical to another by conducting various tests. But no disease is detected.
Finally, having no choice, the husband hugs his wife and cries. He was very kind to his wife.
At that time, the wife asked the husband, what will you do if I die? My husband says I will not marry another woman.
I will cherish your memory for the rest of my life. Wife says – I don’t believe you. My mind says – if I die, you will marry a beautiful girl. Then forget me.
Husband says – If you die, I will not marry any girl; I will give you the proof? The wife says – OK, what will prove. Let me see
Husband says – wait a little. I am bringing proof. Then, the husband goes to the bathroom. After a while, he got his cut penis.
This is proof by giving his cut sex to his wife. Seeing this, the wife screamed and said, “Hey, what did you do!”
I have no disease. I just wanted to see how much you love me. So I pretended to be sick for this, but you ruined it. Then, they had to go through a sexless marriage due to their stupidity.
Dear reader, what is the value of a marriage if there is no sex? Today, we are discussing – what Islam says about sexless marriages. Hope the blog will be helpful for everyone.
What does Islam say about sexless marriages?
Sexless marriage is forbidden in Islam. In some cases, the condition of sexless marriage will be annulled, but the union will remain valid.
Islamic scholars have offered some crucial solutions in this regard. We are discussing them.
One: If someone stipulates at the time of marriage that intercourse between them is not lawful, then his condition and marriage will be void. This is the majority opinion of Fuqaha.
Two: If someone stipulates at the time of marriage that they remain sexless, then according to the firm opinion, the marriage is valid, but the condition is void.
Islamic scholars have discussed sexless marriage at length and extensively. We have only summarized what they said.
There are two main types of sexless marriage in Islam
First Type: They may marry but consider intercourse between them forbidden. No one disagrees about the annulment of the condition in the case of this type of marriage. But there is some difference of opinion on the question of dissolution of marriage.
According to the majority of jurists, the marriage will also be dissolved. Imam Malik, Imam Shafi’i, and Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal are particularly notable.
The second type is – they stipulate that they will not have intercourse. In this case, the marriage will be valid, but the condition will be void.
They can have intercourse after the said marriage. This is the opinion of almost all Imams, including Imam Abu Hanifa.
The third type is – the marriage of a person whose genitals are not strong. Or having genital mutilation. Or, because of some disease or age, his sexual power has been exhausted.
The commandment of such a person is that he cannot marry a youth or a young woman full of lust.
Because no woman will be able to fulfill her sexual needs through such a person, he will be forced to indulge in haram ways.
But if he marries a woman with no sexual desire like her, it will be valid. Both are equal in terms of being sexless.
What does Islam say about marriage and sex?
Islam says – sex between husband and wife is not only a means of worldly pleasures and sexual needs.
Islam has hidden the welfare of this time in each of its provisions. Social order. Health security.
Along with that, the way and system of salvation in the afterlife should be considered. Therefore, in the case of marriage, Islam has given priority to worldly and hereafter welfare.
That is why when a man came and asked to marry a bonded woman, Rasulullah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – did not allow him to do so.
Because having children and raising them is very important in Islam. It brings benefits in this life and the hereafter.
In another hadith, it is said –
A companion asked Rasulullah – Sallallahu ‘Alaihi wa sallam – and said, ‘Can a man gain merit by having intercourse with his wife?
He replied, “Would it not be a sin if he had sexual intercourse with a woman who is not his wife or slave?”
Then why not be rewarded by intercourse in a halal way?’ (Sahih Muslim – 720)
From this hadith, having sex between husband and wife is a measure of importance because it contains the eternal welfare of the world and the hereafter.
Why are sexless marriages forbidden in Islam?
If the husband and wife are sexless, the sweetness of married life is lost. In Islam, the noble purpose of marriage is to be deprived.
One of the primary purposes of marriage in Islam is to give birth to children, to continue from generation to generation, and to preserve character and modesty.
And none of this is achieved by sexless marriage. So Islam does not support such marriage.
Rasulullah – Sallallahu Alaihi wa sallam – encouraged marrying women with more children. In some cases, Bandha prohibited women from marrying.
As narrated by Makil ibn Sinan – may Allah be pleased with him –
A man came to Rasulullah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – and said, I have found a girl who is of noble birth, but she is enslaved. Can I marry him?
Rasulullah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – forbade her from this marriage.
Then, when the man came a second time and made the same request, he refused. Then came the third time and made the same demand. He still refused.
Then Rasulullah – may Allah bless him and grant him peace – said, “Marry very bewitching and very charming women.” Because I will be proud of the number of my Ummah in the Hereafter. (Abu Dawud – 2025)
Can a young man and a young woman be in the same bed without cohabitation simultaneously?
If they are diseased or have lost their sexual power due to old age, then it is acceptable to conscience. But if they possess sexual energy, can one keep the other free from sexual attraction?
Otherwise, where will they get their sexual satisfaction except in the place where Allah has made it legal to fulfill their sexual needs?
