Is TikTok Haram? Clear and precise answers, with FAQs

A cousin of mine was performing well on TikTok, but suddenly, one of his friends told him that TikTok is a world of sin. So he asked me – Is TikTok Haram?

I could answer his question that, yes, TikTok is forbidden. But lately, I’ve noticed a lot of people making good content on TikTok. He is improving people’s spirituality overall through content. So it would not be reasonable to say that TikTok is Haram in one sentence, so I gave him a detailed answer.

Adding some more to the answer I gave him, I am publishing a post for the readers of the Muslim Guiding website titled, Is TikTok Haram?

What is TikTok

TikTok is – a “Throat trembling short video. It is also known as a music video platform and social network.

Zhang Yeming is the founder of Tiktok. It is currently the leading short video platform in Asia. It is gaining popularity as the world’s most prominent music video app. In June 2016, 150 million people used the app.

TikTok was the most downloaded application globally in the first three months of that year—about 5.6 million downloads. This app has more than fifty language facilities in the world.

Is TikTok Haram?

Not, TikTok is generally not Haram. However, most of the content on TikTok is Haram. Because most content is obscene and nudity, videos are banned in Islam. You will see girls in TikTok flaunting hot bodies.

There they wear their clothes so that their body looks attractive. After all, TikTok is an open place to expose your body. So TikTok is Haram.

But if a person creates Islamic content according to Islamic rules, TikTok will not be Haram for him. Instead, it will be considered good work for him. That’s why you will gain status in this world and hereafter.

So without calling TikTok Haram in one sentence, we can say that if nasty videos are uploaded or watched on TikTok, it will be Haram, and if good videos are uploaded, or watched, then TikTok is halal.

Why TikTok Haram?

There needs to be a discussion about whether TikTok is Haram; there are logical and acceptable reasons, what are reasons, and if some reasons are avoided, it will be Halal. In the following headings of the post, I am discussing why TikTok is Haram.

TikTok and dance video

TikTok is the most popular for dance. Younger boys and girls make dance videos in various postures. Through this TikTok dance, perhaps the most obscene thing has spread in the last few years.

Once upon a time, boys and girls only watched the songs and dances of model actresses. However, they did not have the opportunity to make videos themselves. And now, while watching others dance, they absorb it and make dance videos half-naked.

So the dance video category on TikTok has become a vast medium to spread obscenity in society. That obscenity is strictly forbidden in Islam.

In the Holy Quran, Allah Ta’ala says –

Translation: Don’t go for obscenity. Whether it is public or secret. (Surat al-An’am: 151)

So since the TikTok dance videos are full of obscenities, there is no question of being halal. This type of video is forbidden without any question.

Everything that is made, seen, liked, or shared is Haram. Those who are making this video are going to hell themselves. At the same time, innumerable children are driving Adam to hell. May Allah protect us from these.

TikTok and jokes

Another category of TikTok videos is comedy videos. There are enough reasons to call such videos Haram. If a girl makes a funny video, it will be Haram because she will show her face in front of other men.

Short dress

Additionally, wearing short and tight-fit clothes and jokes has various aspects. Considering all factors, TikTok in the comedy category is Haram. And if a boy makes a comedy video, it is essential to see his comedy’s topic.

Because if he makes a video that harms someone else or promotes something forbidden, such as alcohol, heroin, etc., it is also Haram. And it is Makrooh to joke on an everyday topic, even if it is not Haram. Because it is just a senseless act, and Islam never supports meaningless actions.
