Is shark halal in Islam?

Is shark halal? There was a beloved servant of God named Yunus. Allah Ta’ala sent him to the world as a prophet.

Once the prophet Yunus was moving to another area out of pride for his community. On the way, he boarded a boat.

But he did not take conjecture from Allah Pak for this journey. So Allah Ta’ala was displeased with him.

God wanted to punish him a little. That is why Yunus Nabi’s boat got stuck in the middle of the sea.

When the boatmen start negotiating for a solution, they come up with a solution. They think there is a fugitive slave in this boat.

If the fleeing slave is not thrown into the sea, the ship will not be able to reach the shore from the sea.

When Yunus Nabi hears this word, he realizes that he is actually the fleeing slave. Because he was fleeing without the permission of his master Allah.

So he volunteered to be thrown into the sea. But the other passengers of the boat could not accept it.

As a result, the lottery is dead. Yunus Nabi’s name came up three times in the lottery. Eventually, he jumped into the seawater.

As soon as he fell into the water, a huge marine fish came and devoured him. In fact, Allah Ta’ala instructed the fish to do this.

Many believe that the fly that swallowed the prophet Yunus was a shark. Because the shape and behaviour of marine animals are very different.

There are many stories and horror stories about sharks. Which really arouses curiosity and interest in sharks.

The question that arises among many is is the shark really a species of fish? Or is it a ferocious marine animal?

And this question raises the question in the minds of Muslims – is shark halal? What is the provision of eating sharks in Islam? Today we are going to discuss the answer to that question in detail.

Is shark halal in Islam?

It is halal in Islam to eat all kinds of marine animals except those which are harmful to human health in medical science and animals which are forbidden in the Quran and Hadith.

So sharks are halal. We have no difficulty eating sharks. Strong marine animals such as whales, crabs, turtles, octopuses, snails, etc. are all halal.

It is haraam to eat certain marine animals like frogs, crocodiles etc. Because there are clear restrictions on these.

Shark eating is halal and its evidence

The Qur’an and Hadith state that it is permissible to eat all kinds of marine animals:

In the Holy Quran, Allah Ta’ala says:

Translation: “The prey of the sea and the food of the sea have been made lawful for you.” (Surat al-Ma’idah: 96)

In another verse Allah Ta’ala says –

Translation: “Tell me – there is no haram food except the dead animal or the flowing blood or the flesh of the pig that has been revealed to me. Because it is unclean.” (Surat an-Nam – 5)

In hadith

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

هو الطهور ماؤه الحل ميتته

Translation: “The water of the sea is sacred, and the dead animals that live in the water are also halal.” (Tirmidhi – 69)

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

Translation: “What Allah Ta’ala has made lawful in His Book is lawful. And what He has made unlawful is unlawful. And what He has remained silent about is forgiveness.”

So accept God’s forgiveness. Because Allah Tayala does not forget anything. Then he recited this verse, “Do not forget your Lord” (Maryam – 74). (Silsilatus Sahihah – 2256)

The famous Companion Shuraih said, “It is lawful to eat all living things that live in water.” (Sahih Bukhari 5/2091)

Moreover, one of the basic principles of Islam is that all worldly things are valid unless they are forbidden in Islam.

And eating sharks or other marine animals such as crabs, turtles, octopuses, snails, oysters, etc. is not forbidden in the Qur’an-Sunnah. So these are halal.

From the above discussion, it has been proved that there is no impediment to the eating of marine animals being halal. Calling them Makrooh is not subject to proof.

But if one does not like to eat it, then it is his personal matter. But there is no reason to call them Haram or Makrooh.

Provision of sea frogs

It is haram to eat sea frogs. Because in the hadith there is a prohibition on killing frogs.

Narrated by Abdur Rahman Ibn Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) –

“Which physician asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about frogs and whether they would apply it in medicine? He forbade it to be killed. ” (Ahmad 15330)

And one of the basic principles of the Shari’ah is that it is haram to kill an animal and it is haraam to eat it. If it was halal to eat, it would be legal to kill it.

Provision of crocodile eating

The imams disagreed about the crocodile. According to Imam Abu Hanifa, Shafi’i, Ahmad bin Humble and most of the Imams, eating crocodiles is forbidden. Only halal according to Imam Malik.

Because crocodile is an amphibian. As it lives in water, it also lives inland and in the forest. At the same time, he is a ferocious animal with big teeth.

In the hadith, it has been declared haram to eat wild animals with big claws. Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said:

“It is haraam to eat the flesh of all wild animals with long teeth.” (Sahih Muslim 1933)
