What is a crab? The identity of the crab

The crab is a marine or aquatic animal. Their bodies are covered with a thick skeletons. They have a pair of stiff stands.

So far, 6,793 species of crabs have been found. Crabs are found in all the seas or ponds and canals of the world.

Crab species may also vary in water and location. There is a big difference between freshwater crabs and saltwater crabs.

Is crab halal in Islam?

The crab is basically a marine animal. And the majority of Fuqaha’i Keram’s opinion on seawater is that all kinds of marine animals are halal except a few.

However, many scholars of the Hanafi school consider it haraam to eat crabs. Again, some of them consider it Makrooh and some of them even consider it valid.

Because according to Hanafi Madhhab, it is halal to eat only fish from aquatic animals. It is not halal to eat any other animal. And since crabs are not fish, it is not legal to eat them.

Evidence of crab halal

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

‘He has made lawful for you all kinds of marine prey and its food. (Surat al-Ma’ida – 96)

The guidance in this verse is quite extensive. This proves that all animals that move in the sea or underwater are halal.

And since the crab is a marine animal, it will be proved halal by the breadth of that verse.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,

‘Seawater is pure and its dead animals are halal.’ (Musnad Ahmad)

In this hadith, an animal found dead in the sea has been declared halal. But no type of animal was specified.

Therefore, all kinds of marine animals will be included in the breadth of the meaning of the hadith. And by making the dead marine animals halal, the living animals will be better halal.

The famous Companion Shuraih said – It is lawful to eat all the animals that live in the water. (Sahih Bukhari 5/2091)

Moreover, one of the basic principles of Islam is that all worldly things are valid unless they are forbidden in Islam.

Therefore, it is halal to eat crabs as there is no verse or hadith which proves that crabs are haram.

Is crab halal Hanafi? Evidence of Crab Haram

In the Holy Quran, Allah Ta’ala says,

Translation: He has made their sacred objects lawful. And forbade filthy things. (Surat al-A’raf: 156)

In that verse, Allah Ta’ala has forbidden ‘Khabayes’ (dirty things). It is called Khabayes, which is the natural hatred of human beings.

Meanwhile, human nature hates to eat crab so it belongs to the dirty stuff. And dirty things are forbidden. So crabs are also forbidden.

Thus there is no evidence that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his Companions ate such aquatic animals.

In addition, there is a hadith narrated from Abdur Rahman bin Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade a doctor to make medicine by killing frogs. (Abu Dawood – 361)

All these verses and hadiths prove that all kinds of marine animals are forbidden. Of these, crabs are particularly notable.

The quality of the crab

Crabs contain as much protein as meat. And Crabs do not have connective tissue so they are easily digested by people of all ages.

Crabs contain omega 3 fatty acids. and Crabs contain more selenium than marine fish.

All marine fish contain selenium, but crabs contain more selenium. Selenium boosts the human immune system and regulates thyroid hormones.

Crabmeat contains 56 times more copper and phosphorus than beef and chicken. Phosphorus is the second most essential mineral after calcium.
