Can husband and wife pray together in Islam?

Husband and wife can pray together. Whether those prayers are obligatory or supererogatory, there is no problem.

It is better to pray together than to pray alone. This will make the bond of love between them stronger and more intact.

And the Islamic environment will prevail in the house. Islamic consciousness will be awakened in one’s children. Above all, it will help them to gain nearness to God.

Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that his grandmother Malaika prepared food for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and invited him.

Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to the invitation and ate and said, ‘Stand up.’ I will pray with you.

Anas – Radiyallahu Anhu – said, “Then I washed an old mat with black spots due to its long fall.”

Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood on it to pray. A child and I stood behind him.

And so many old women stood behind us. And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed two rak’ahs with us and returned the salaam. (Bukhari and Muslim)

Can husband and wife pray together in Jamaat?

Husband and wife will be able to collect the congregation together. By this, they will also get the reward of Jamaat.

Because according to the pure opinion, if there is a Muqtada with the Imam, it is lawful to perform Jamaat.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

فإذا حضرت الصلاة فليؤذن لكم أحدكم وليؤمكم أكبركم

Translation: When the time for prayer arrives, let one of you call to prayer. And let the eldest of you lead the way.

This hadith proves that two people can perform Jamaat together. One will be Imam and the other will be Muktadis.

She can be two men, one woman, and one man. If there is a woman, then that woman must be mahram like mother, sister, wife.

Ibn Kudama said the congregation would be made up of two or more people. We do not know if there is any disagreement in this case.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) led the prayers once with Hudhayfah, once with Ibn Masood, and once with Ibn ‘Abbas.

Therefore, if a person leads the prayers with his slave or his wife, then he will get the virtue of Jamaat.

Al-Majmoo ‘says that it is lawful for a person to hold a congregation with his wife or a mahram.

Because it is halal to meet him in private. However, if a non-mahram woman prays in the congregation, then the set is haram.

Imam Nawabi said, if a person prays in his house with his friend or wife or child, then he will get the virtue of Jamaat.

When a husband and wife pray together?

Although it is permissible to pray in a congregation at home with one’s family, the congregation that the Shari’ah encourages is the congregation that takes place in the mosque.

That is why it is not permissible for anyone to perform prayers at home without going to the mosque without any disability.

Below are some examples of the reasons why it is legal to pray at home without going to the mosque.

Reasons for not going to the mosque are legal

  • Heavy rain.
  • More mud on the road.
  • Due to the extreme darkness.
  • If it is very cloudy at night.
  • Due to illness.
  • If there is no sight in the eyes.
  • If too old.
  • Time to prepare for the tour.
  • Due to frequent urination.
  • In captivity.
  • If one leg or both legs are amputated.
  • If engaged in the service of a patient.
  • In a state of extreme hunger when food is in front of him.
  • If you leave the house due to extreme cold, there is a strong risk of getting sick.
  • If you do not have the security of your property while praying in congregation.
  • In case of departure of partner train, flight or car

If any of the reasons mentioned above exist, then any person can perform prayers at home without going to the mosque.

And only then can he read the congregation at home with his wife if he wants. By this, the congregation will get the reward.

Can a wife be an imam for her husband?

The wife can never be the Imam for the husband. If the husband and wife pray together, then the husband will be the Imam in all cases.

If a wife becomes the imam of her husband’s prayers, their prayers will not be pure. Prayers must be read again.

Because Islam has not entrusted the responsibility of Imamate to a wife or a woman. So the husband will lead his wife. But the opposite will not happen.

How to lead prayer with wife?

Ash Sharhul Kabir says that if someone leads a woman, she will stand behind him. (Al-Mughni – 2/6)

Because the right place for women is the back. Allah Ta’ala has appointed men as guardians of women.

Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

أخروهن من حيث أخرهن الله

Translation: Put the women behind as Allah Ta’ala has put them behind.

Therefore, if the husband and wife perform the prayers together, the wife will stand behind the husband. This is the only way to purify the prayers.
