What is awrah in Islam? Awrah meaning
The word awrah (العورة) means error or deviation. Then it is converted from this meaning and is used in the case of different money objects.
Since the erring person dislikes having his faults revealed before someone else, everything that belongs to the aura is opposed.
And since it is a shameful and shameful act to reveal one’s private parts in front of others, it is also awrah.
Another meaning of the word awrah is to cover. Since it is obligatory to protect a person’s private parts in front of the eyes, it is called awrah.
What is awrah in Islam for a man?
There is disagreement among the Imams about the extent of male aura in Islam.
Hanafi jurists think that the aura of a man is from the navel to the knee. So it is obligatory to cover this part.
Another Jamaat faqih thinks that the awrah of men is only a matter of shame. That is the road to the urinal and its surroundings.
Dr. Yusuf al-Kardawi said –
Both places of shame are Awrah Mugallah. It is unanimously forbidden to publish and look at this part without any particular need.
The majority of jurists think that both thighs are awrah. They say Torah from the navel to the knees of men.
They present some hadiths in support of their opinion, which are flawed in a single Sanad. But he has claimed that if a few certificates are collected, it reaches Hasan or Sahih level.
Some other jurists have said – Men’s thighs are not awrah. Because many times there is a Saheeh hadeeth to the effect that the knees of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would be exposed.
But the most beautiful and acceptable thing is – both places of shame are Aurah Mughals. The navel and knees are awrah Mukhaffafah.
Therefore, a man must cover both his private parts. It would be a grave sin to reveal it to the public.
However, it would not be a sin to expose the navel, knees, or thighs from time to time except for the place of shame.
But it is Sunnah to wear clothes covering the navel, thighs, and whole body. It is unsightly to keep some parts of the thigh or abdomen open.
The awrah of a man in Salah – awrah in Islam
Awrah, in the prayers of a man, is from the navel to the knees. If one covers this part and performs the prayers, he will serve his prayers.
Muhammad ibn Jahash narrates:
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by my mother-in-law one day.
At that time, he saw both thighs of my mother (may Allah be pleased with her) open, and he said –
يا معمر غط فخذيك؛ فإن الفخذين عورة
Translation: O my mother, cover your thighs. Because both thighs are aura.
However, the Sunnah is that a man should wear clothes covering the whole body while performing the prayers.
It is Sunnah for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) to wear the same clothes that he used to wear all the time.
What is awrah for a woman?
Her whole body is a woman’s awrah in front of a mahram man. If he goes in front of a stranger or goes out of the house, covering him from head to toe is obligatory.
Hands and feet can be kept open. However, there is disagreement over whether the face can be kept open.
According to the majority of Imams, the face is Aurah. But Shaykh Alabi has proved by reference in his book ‘Jilbabu Maratil Muslima’ that the beginning of women is not Aurah.
However, the demand of taqwa and divinity is not to reveal one’s face in front of others. Although covering the face is not obligatory, it is desirable to observe it voluntarily.
The awrah of a woman in Salah
The whole body except the wrists of both hands, the soles of both feet, and the face is the aura of a woman’s prayers.
If the hair of the head or any other part of the body is exposed, the prayers will be ruined. The prayers have to be performed again.
Imam Ibn Kudama said:
Women should cover their heads during prayers. If a woman prays with all her head uncovered, she must perform the prayers again by consensus. (Al-Mughni)
What is the awrah of a woman in front of a woman?
If a woman is in front of another woman, her aura is from the navel to the knees.
So if a woman reveals her breasts in front of another woman, it is not a bad thing.
But it is unethical for a woman to reveal her breasts in front of another woman.
Therefore, a decent and tasteful Muslim woman should not keep her chest open in front of other women.
